THE EXPERIENCE BEHIND BE A DOG WALKER
How I built my dog walking business
I’m Peter. I spent around ten years working as a professional dog walker in East Lothian. I built the business around two group walks a day and a working week that suited my family life.
I built and run Lothian Walkies, my dog walking service in East Lothian. The Starter System shares the practical lessons I learned doing the work.
My first clients came through people who knew me locally. From there I learned what makes the work sustainable: earning trust, keeping travel within a sensible area, meeting each dog properly and planning days that work in real weather, with real pick-ups and unexpected changes.
What the job taught me
Keep the area workable
Taking dogs too far from the walking routes adds hours of driving. A clear service area helps protect your time and the quality of each walk.
Build the right group
Phone conversations, first meetings and trial walks help you decide whether a dog is a good fit before adding it to a group.
There are plenty of other decisions too: pricing, insurance, transport, keys, safety, communication with owners and what to do when plans change. These are the practical details I wanted to put into a usable starting point.
Why I made the Starter System
Before buying equipment or making a logo, it helps to know whether dog walking could support the income and life you want. The Business Planner starts with your numbers and boundaries. The First 30 Days guide then takes you through the steps towards your first clients.
It is guidance from my experience, not a promise that every location, dog or business will work the same way. Use it to make decisions that fit your own circumstances.
